I had a very nice birthday this year from Taipei to Hong Kong

It has been a crazy year. I fell really hard right before my last yer birthday. I was completely lost in the dark, but i probably wouldn’t be able to go through my “depression” without all my family and friends.

However, I probably wouldn’t grow so much if I didn’t fall this hard.

I am glad that everyone is back to normal. Thanks for those who have been very supportive. I love you all!

I’m a bit annoyed by a project that I’m working on right now.

My position is titled as “co-producer”. In the real world, the director should also confirm with the producer whenever he wants to make any decision. Unfortunately, the project I’m in charge of right now, is going on the opposite direction.

I do respect the director as he is one of the very important artists in Taiwan. He has way more experiences than I have; however, I’ve a feeling that he’s taking this as his advantage. He has been so sneaky that I really don’t know if I should tell him to stop or just pretend I see nothing. He’s seriously making my job so much harder in a way that I really don’t want to deal with him anymore, even though I know deep in my heart that I’ll definitely be in trouble if I don’t try to cooperate with him.

I’m willing to sacrifice myself for arts, but I don’t want to sacrifice myself just to make someone looks good in front of people. Am I doing this so that it will become a better performance? or he will have a better reputation.

I’m lost, in the world of unreal arts.

Last night I went to watch the Taipei Philharmonic Orchestra performing Shostakovish, including his violin concerto and symphony no.5

I’m not a string player so I won’t comment anything about the concerto, except that I really like the violinist. For the symphony no.5, there are good stuff and also some bad stuff.

Because it’s kind of a pick-up orchestra (maybe half of the players are from either NSO or TSO), it’s so easy to tell that some sections have no chemistry at all; however, since most of the players are professional orchestral players, they know their parts well.

In the section at the very end of the 4th movement when most of the strings and winds play the same note for like 10000 times, the tempo the conductor took was fairly slow. I was really surprised as I have never heard this slow tempo before. After they finished playing and all the standing novation, the conductor walked on the stage explaining why he took a slower tempo that the end.

He said Shostakovich did so many changes after his premier performance. In fact, the Russian government forced him to make all the changes. Those governors suggested that the original tempo (around quarter = 92) was too slow, so they forced him to bring up the tempo to around quarter to 120. It was very interested to know all this inside stories even though I have played and listened to this symphony so many times.

Of course there are some elements in this orchestra that really disappointed me which I won’t comment about it here; however, the horn section was pretty awesome. The principal horn 陳信仲 played the solo brilliantly. His solo in the first movement was probably so far the best Shostakovich 5 solo that I have heard so far in Taiwan. I really enjoyed his sound, and the rest of the players were pretty awesome too!
